Who is Thapelo Masilela? An Author’s Journey
Thapelo Masilela is a seasoned South African journalist and celebrated children’s author, known for his unique ability to blend humour, wisdom, and everyday life into captivating stories. Now in his seventies and based in Hammanskraal, Masilela has spent decades crafting tales that resonate with readers of all ages.
He is the author of the beloved Vusi and the Crowing Cock series—acclaimed for its witty storytelling, rich imagination, and meaningful messages. His work explores themes of growth, curiosity, and resilience, often set against the backdrop of real-world challenges like the Covid-19 pandemic. His books, which have been praised in literary circles, include titles awarded at the Gauteng Writers Festival.
Masilela’s career spans years in journalism, having contributed to several prominent newspapers like Ntshebelele and Seipone in Mokopane. His stories are now part of school libraries and literary programs across the North West and Gauteng provinces.
He is a former member of the South African Writers’ Circle, the Congress of South African Writers (COSAW), and currently a proud member of the National Writers Association of South Africa (NWASA).
